ATLANTA (AP) — The last thing Matt Olson wanted to do was hit the ball.

Then he saw it heading for a spot in the infield where no one was standing.

Sometimes, hit ‘em where they ain’t works just as well as smacking it over the wall.

Olson's check-swing double to left with the infield shifted the other way brought home the tying run in the 11th for Atlanta, and pinch-hitter Travis d'Arnaud won it with a single through Houston's drawn-in defense.

Rallying twice in extra innings, the Braves beat the Astros 5-4 on Saturday night for their 11th win in 12 games.

The reigning World Series champions are still three games behind the NL East-leading New York Mets, but no team is playing with more confidence than the Braves.

“We don't give up until the last guy,” d'Arnaud said. “It's a contagious thing.”

The Astros scored two in the 10th, only to have Atlanta match them in the bottom half — with 21-year-old Michael Harris II providing the big hit with an RBI double before he came around to score on Robbie Grossman's single through the shift.

Houston went back ahead on Jeremy Peña's slow roller that brought home the go-ahead run, but the Braves rallied again.

This time, they ended it.

After Dansby Swanson was placed at second base against Ryne Stanek (1-1), Austin Riley walked. Olson tried to hold up his swing, but it worked out just fine when he sent a run-scoring hit through the abandoned shortstop hole.

“I was not happy to make contact,” Olson said. “Then I saw no one was standing there. I actually started laughing pretty quickly. Somehow, I wind up with a double.”

With runners at second and third and no outs, the Astros intentionally walked William Contreras. But d'Arnaud lined one past diving first baseman Yuri Gurriel to win it for the Braves.

“We're playing some good baseball,” d'Arnaud said.

Jackson Stephens (2-2) earned the win by giving up an unearned run in the 11th.

“We fought, they fought,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “It was a great game to watch if you're a fan.”

Both starters turned in strong performances, each going six innings and allowing only a solo homer.

Cristian Javier pitched two-hit ball for the Astros but again failed to get much offensive support. Houston has been held to two runs or fewer in nine of his 23 starts, leaving him with a 7-8 record even though his ERA dropped to 2.88.

Rookie Spencer Strider surrendered three hits, walked two and struck out nine for the Braves. The growing popularity of the 23-year-old Strider, known for his thick mustache and 100 mph fastball, was evident from all the the fans in the sellout crowd of 42,893 wearing fake 'staches in his honor.

Atlanta's Vaughn Grissom kept up his torrid hitting since being called up from the minors less than two weeks ago.

The 21-year-old launched one into the Astros' bullpen in the fifth, giving him three homers in his first 11 big league games.

Grissom's homer came after Peña went deep for Houston in the top half of the inning to break up the scoreless duel. The Astros shortstop drove one the opposite way, the ball just clearing the tall wall in right field for his 16th homer of the season.

Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez was back at the ballpark, one day after shortness of breath led him to be taken to an Atlanta hospital for tests.

While doctors found no cause for his breathing problems, Houston held Alvarez out of the lineup Saturday and kept a close eye on him for any signs of further trouble.

Baker said Alvarez could return to the lineup as a designated hitter for the finale of the three-game series.

There was little indication of all the drama to come in extra winnings.

Through nine innings, the teams had combined for just seven hits and 21 strikeouts.

“When runs are at a premium, you know it's going to take a big hit,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “They got some, we got one more.”

Astros OF Mauricio Dubón wasn't seriously hurt after crashing into the wall attempting to make a catch in the fifth inning of Friday's game. Dubón was available Saturday but wasn’t used. “He's better," Baker said. “He hit in the cage.”

RH Charlie Morton (6-5, 4.04) will take the mound for the Braves in Sunday's series finale. He'll be opposed by RH José Urquidy (11-4, 3.69, who is coming off 7 2/3 innings of one-hit ball in his last start against the White Sox. Urquidy has 10 consecutive quality starts since June 14, going 6-1 with a 2.64 ERA over that span.

Ben Simmons sat down with the 76ers brass in Los Angeles last summer and demanded a trade, letting the front office know he had no intention of attending training camp or playing in the 2021-22 season.

Yadier Molina has rejoined the St. Louis Cardinals after traveling to his native Puerto Rico for the end of his basketball team’s championship run. The 40-year-old Molina owns the Vaqueros de Bayamón, who play in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league. Bayamón beat San Germán 75-61 on Saturday to clinch its 16th BSN title. Molina was placed on the restricted list Saturday and missed the final two games of St. Louis’ weekend sweep in Arizona. The veteran catcher went 0 for 3 in the Cardinals’ 1-0 victory over the Cubs in the opener of a five-game series at Wrigley Field.

Nelson Cruz hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning to lift the Washington Nationals to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Cruz, who had hit a two-run double in the fifth, smacked a 1-1 pitch from Brandon Hughes (1-1) to center to snap a 4-all tie with one out in the eighth. Carl Edwards Jr. (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Kyle Finnegan worked the ninth for his fifth save. Ian Happ hit two solo homers for the Cubs, giving him three in his past three games.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed veteran forward Paul Stastny to a $1.5 million contract for next season. Stastny's addition could fill a void with winger Max Pacioretty expected to miss several months after surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. The Hurricanes are trying to improve their scoring after averaging fewer than three goals a game in the playoffs this past season. Stastny scored 21 in 71 games with Winnipeg last season and has 310 in the regular season and playoffs since breaking into the NHL. The 36-year-old also gives Carolina some depth down the middle after losing Vincent Trocheck in free agency.

Emilio Pagán pitched two scoreless innings after Tyler Mahle departed with right shoulder fatigue, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-0 for a three-game sweep. Jose Miranda homered for Minnesota, which is fighting with Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox for control of the crowded AL Central. After Mahle left in the third, Pagán, Griffin Jax, Jhoan Duran, Michael Fulmer and Trevor Megill finished Minnesota’s second straight shutout. A diving catch by center fielder Gilberto Celestino saved a run in the seventh.

An advocacy group says Qatar arrested at least 60 foreign workers who protested going months without their pay and deported some of them. The incident comes just three months before Doha hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The move comes as Qatar faces intense international scrutiny over its labor practices ahead of the tournament. Qatar, like other Gulf Arab nations, heavily relies on foreign labor. Qatar’s government acknowledged that “a number of protesters were detained for breaching public safety laws.” However, it declined to offer any information about the arrests or any deportations. It said it was investigating the firm involved and planned to settle workers' salaries.

Greg Norman tried to start a world tour in 1994 only for the PGA Tour to quash the movement and steal his idea. And now details have emerged from a private players-only meeting last week. They raised the concept of playing a series of big tournaments with small fields and rich purses. It sounds like the Saudi-funded LIV Golf that Norman is running. AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson says the meeting’s value goes deeper than the details. Most telling was how the 23 players at the meeting are taking ownership over the future of the tour.

Shilese Jones grabbed the lead at the U.S. gymnastics championships, riding a dynamic bars routine to post an all-around total of 57.200. The 20-year-old Jones began the competition with a staggering 14.850 during her bars set, the highest score of the night on any event. She carried the momentum across the final three rotations to cap off the best night of her elite career. Konnor McClain, whose 14.8 on beam marked the best score in the world in the event in 2022, is second at 56.400. Jordan Chiles, a silver medalist on the 2020 Olympic team, is third at 56.150.

As stout as the San Francisco 49ers were defensively last season when that unit helped carry the team to the NFC title game, there was one glaring weakness on that side of the ball. The Niners struggled to take the ball away with interceptions with the most glaring example coming in the NFC championship game when Jaquiski Tartt dropped one in the fourth quarter against the Rams that could have helped seal a trip to the Super Bowl. Since the start of training camp this summer, those missed chances and dropped interceptions have turned into takeaways with the improved San Francisco secondary showing off ball-hawking skills in practice and the first two exhibition games.

Deuce Vaughn is perhaps the most important player for a Kansas State team many have pegged as a dark-horse contender for the Big 12 championship. He was third in the league in rushing last season behind two players who are now in the NFL. The Texas native is a preseason All-American as an all-purpose player. He won’t have to wait long to begin making a national impression this season. After the Wildcats open with South Dakota on Sept. 3, they face Missouri. Then, after a game against Tulane, they visit ninth-ranked Oklahoma for an early conference showdown.
