Summer is synonymous with plenty of fun, warm-weather and outdoor things — the beach, ice cream, fireflies, mowing the lawn, etc. One of the best and most thrilling aspects of the summer season, though, is riding roller coasters.

Summer isn’t officially roller coaster season but it’s hard to picture anyone riding a roller coaster in February or November. When school’s out and the sun is shining, there’s no better time to strap in and kiss the edge of death while hurtling downward dozens of feet at a near-90-degree angle. In fact, National Roller Coaster Day is Aug. 16.

What’s more, Pennsylvania is rife with opportunities: Hersheypark, Kennywood and Idlewild make the state a haven for roller coaster enthusiasts.
