From unveiling the “digital heart” of its next generation excavators to Toromont Cat’s acquisition of Hewitt, 2017 was a big year fro Caterpillar. Here’s our top five stories (in no particular order) from throughout the year:

The acquisition of Hewitt Equipment by Toromont Industries is the largest deal between Caterpillar dealers in the manufacturer’s history.

On Aug. 28, Toromont announced it’s purchasing the Quebec-based Caterpillar dealer for more than $1 billion.

After 25 years, hundreds of test machines and thousands of customer interviews, Caterpillar has released its next generation excavators.

The new 320 GC, 320 and 323 20-ton class excavators, unveiled at Cat’s end-of-year press briefing in Edwards, Illinois, offer 15 per cent lower owning and operating cost, 25 per cent lower fuel consumption and 45 per cent improved efficiency, when compared to F Series excavators.

Caterpillar is looking to take a bigger bite out of the heavy equipment parts market with the launch of Yellowmark.

The new Caterpillar brand will deliver a lower-priced tier of aftermarket parts for small and midsized equipment. Cat announced the new brand during its end of year press briefing in Peoria, Illinois on Nov. 16.

Cat entered the UTV market with the introduction of the gasoline-powered CUV82 and diesel-powered CUV102D.

The new vehicles are built with a four-wheel independent suspension system with a front sway bar to provide stability at full load. As well, long swing-arm suspension, custom-tuned springs and shocks deliver a balance between a smooth ride and hauling loads.
