Night 1 was damp, but the music blazed at Merriweather Post Pavilion

Friday night at M3 always belongs to Kix, and this year was no exception. Led by their effervescent frontman Steve Whiteman, whose mid-song banter sparkled as much as his red sequined cocktail jacket, Maryland’s favorite rock and rollers brought some sizzle to the cold, damp and misting Merriweather Post Pavilion on the first night of this year’s iconic three-day rock festival. 

I’ve seen Kix more times than I can remember, but tonight felt a little special - maybe it was the weather, because those of us that braved the elements were committed to a good time, and the band made sure they delivered. Or maybe it was because of the pair of stellar sets that paved the way for the hometown heroes. Lizzy Borden stole the show with a theatrical rock juggernaut that left everyone wishing the thirty minute set was significantly longer, and Doro reinforced her Queen Of Metal reputation with a set that overflowed with fist-pumping and head banging. The short first night was kicked off by Count’s 77, all four bands setting the pace for what is sure to be a colossal weekend celebrating the music that defined our generation.
