Mongoose has revived the Hooligan, a classic BMX from the 90s reborn with 29″ wheels. The so-called Big BMX is made for “riding the streets like a boss“, for those who want the playfulness and style of a BMX but the fast-rolling efficiency of 29″ wheels for going the distance. It comes in three styles, including a 26” Fat Bike.

The Mongoose Hooligan was a BMX workhorse throughout the 1990s, a staple in the lineup from 1990 through to 2001. The younger audience may be more familiar with the Mongoose Hooligan as a scooter, an alternative vehicle for the take-offs and rails of the skate park. In 2022 it makes its return as a BMX, only with 29″ wheels this time, as opposed to the much smaller 20″ wheels one would normally see on a BMX.

The 2022 Mongoose Hooligan Hi-Ten steel frame will be available from May 17th in Blue or Black colorways

Those bigger hoops and the longer rear-centre length that comes along with them will change the bike’s nature significantly, making it a fair bit more challenging to jib about on, at least for most mortals anyway. The Hooligan retains other hallmarks of a BMX with a single-speed drivetrain (25T chainring a 13T sprocket), a rear brake only, and a braced 5″ rise handlebar, with a Mongoose-branded top tube pad on the steel frame options.

The Mongoose Hooligan will be available in three formats:

The most affordable of those is the Hi-Tensile, retailing at $529.99 USD for the complete bike, available in black and blue colorways. The Hooligan AL will set you back a little more at $579.99 USD. While the frame itself is made of 6061 aluminum, its rigid fork is the same Hi-Tensile steel seen on the lower-end bike. This one is available in silver and green colorways.

The Aluminum frame Mongoose Hooligan will be available from June 2022 in Green and Silver colorways

The two 29ers are identical in their geometry with a 70° head tube angle, 71° seat tube angle and BB drop of 65mm. The top tube length comes in a 640mm paired with 454mm chainstays. They are spec’d with a 48mm stem and 5″ rise bars at 730mm wide.

Stock of the 26″ Mongoose Hooligan BMX Fat Bike is due this Fall

The Hooligan Fat BMX gets an aluminum frame too, with a different geometry based around its 26″ wheels and 4″ tires. It also benefits from a front brake, too. It goets a shorter front end but a much longer rear-centre to accomodate the massive rear tire, and it is 5mm higher than the 29er. It is also spec’d with a long 90mm reach stem and a narrower 700mm bar with a 6″ rise. That one is the most expensive of the lot, retailing at $749.99 USD.

90mm reach stem seems like a typo….
